Pilates for Arthritis

Description

Pilates for Arthritis presented by Zoey Trap, MS

Did you know that arthritis is the leading cause of disability in America? And that more than 50 million adults and 300,000 children in America have some type of arthritis? Arthritis is common, but not well understood as it is not a single disease but is an informal way of referring to joint pain or joint disease. With over 100 different types of arthritis related conditions, where does an instructor begin?

Multiple studies show that moderate exercise is beneficial for people with arthritis. Learn an approach to help your clients workout, reduce pain, and increase function.

Equipment Needed: Mat, towels, balls, flexcushion or 4” barrel if you have them! We will discuss equipment adaptations for working with arthritis however, no equipment will be needed.

Objectives:

At the end of the session the instructor will be able to:

· Describe the main types of arthritis and important contraindications associated with each type.

· Plan a full session workout that takes arthritis into equipment and exercise considerations based on the 4Ss and the students arthritis history.

· Prepare to teach 75+ mobilizations and preparatory exercises

· Gain mobilizations for each major joint in the body

· Develop confidence in working with arthritic students

Why should I take this course?

Understand the Theory- What is arthritis, what are the main types of arthritis, what are the do’s and don’ts for working with people who have arthritis, how to match client goals with an intelligent approach that factors in their arthritis.

Explore the Practical teaching side- Understand how to start with a client with arthritis, what to expect, and how to help a client preserve movement and reduce pain in a full session. Discover powerful new tools – mobilizations- that will help you teach students with arthritis and help you help them to a more pain free life. Mobilizations can be added into mat classes or full sessions workouts to provide joint ease or given as homework to improve quality of life.

Get student handouts and use the recording to practice the mobilizations and gain confidence in the month following the session.
